Berhampur, Jan. 16: The case of the death of two cousins — Biswanath Maharana (40) and Sanjaya Maharana (27) — took a new turn today after Ghanashyam, Biswanath’s younger brother told police a startling tale.
“Biswanath killed Sanjaya by hitting his head by stone and subsequently committed suicide on the rail line,” Dipak Mishra, inspector in-charge Baidyanathpur police station said, quoting Ghanashyam.
According to Ghanashyam, he met Biswanath and Sanjaya at Engineering School Square on Thursday evening.
Both of them were drunk and Biswanath, who wanted to go home walking, asked Ghanashyam to take his bike and go home. When Ghanashyam asked why, they refused to answer.
Ghanashyam followed both of them up to Industrial Estate Level Crossing Gate from where he saw them walk along the railway line. Ghanashyam thought the two were going to Biswanath’s house by short cut. But when he reached Biswanath’s house, he found the door locked.
He searched for them for a few minutes and went near the store house of a real estate company.
When Ghanashyam went there, Biswanath ran towards the nearby railway line. Sanjaya was lying on the ground, vomiting blood.
Ghanashyam was sure that Biswanath had murdered Sanjaya and he was terribly frightened.
Ghanashyam stayed at the railway station throughout the night and went to his house at Khodasingi in the wee hours of Friday, but didn’t disclose anything to the family members, police said.
Later, he went to Gurunthi, seven km from Berhampur, and learned that Biswanath had died too.
Ghanashyam reached Baidyanathpur police station and told his story, according to police sources. Ghanashyam could not, however, say what the motive was behind the murder.
“The post-mortem report revealed that Sanjay and Biswanath had drunk liquor. Sanjaya sustained internal injuries in the head. Biswanath’s head was severed from his body not by a sharp weapon but crushed by the wheels of a train,” said Mishra.
The driver of a goods train reported a run over case at the government railway police station at Berhampur on the same night.
