The Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has invited designs from expert firms to develop the stretch of Janpath between Vani Vihar and Ram Mandir Square, the busy traffic junction at Raj Mahal and two parks at Saheed Nagar. Park for disabled kids, Saheed Nagar

BSCL has selected an abandoned park at Saheed Nagar, which caters to the need of nearby residents, for holding various community events. The park is spread over 1,695 square metres. It does not have any boundary wall or illumination. The administration wants to develop this park for disabled children, with special ramps and signages. Once developed, the park can cater to the needs of nearly 5,000 kids every day, an official said. The expert firms will have to provide open green and landscaped areas and paved pathways along with facilities such as illumination, benches, toilet and drinking water.

Rajmahal junction, Ashok Nagar

Rajmahal Square is at the intersection of the two major stretches of Janpath and Rajpath. There are also major markets in the vicinity, such as the Unit-I daily market, Unit-II market, Bapuji Nagar and Ashok Nagar markets. The Bhubaneswar railway station is also close by. The road is 60m wide, which is divided into four lanes. At present, the junction doesn’t have any marked lanes, speed-regulating mechanism and speed limit signages. It has an on-street parking facility, which causes traffic snarls. It also has a footpath, which is encroached upon by vendors, auto-rickshaws and taxis. The administration plans to develop this junction with zebra crossings, traffic lights and greenery.

Robot Park, Saheed Nagar

The Saheed Nagar BDA Park, locally known as Robot Park, is divided into three parts, each separated by a road. Residential areas surround the park. The park is spread over 5,346 square metres and it is located close to the Saheed Nagar Market. Although the park is reasonably well-maintained, people frequently urinate and litter the surroundings. Once the park is developed, it is expected to benefit around 5,000 people living in the surroundings. The administration plans to develop the park by introducing water fountains and provisions of canteen and play area. Basic facilities, such as water and toilets, parking, dustbins, illumination and a yoga platform, will also be set up.

Janpath

Janpath is one of the main arterial roads of the city that bears a heavy traffic volume throughout the day. The administration plans to develop the 2.4-km stretch of Janpath between Vani Vihar and Ram Mandir Square with footpaths, vending zones, organised parking facilities, speed-regulating mechanism, automatic traffic lighting system and roadside plantation. At present, this stretch faces problems such as unauthorised parking, while vendors also eat into the road space. Large sections of the pavements and service lanes on this stretch are encroached upon by unauthorised parking, street vendors, and structures such as temples and electronic transformers.
