Siblings held for fraud
Bhubaneswar: Police on Sunday arrested three brothers for allegedly duping a man of Rs 33 lakh on the pretext of providing land at Jatni in 2012. The accused have been identified as Sudhir Sahoo, Jitendra Sahoo and Ratnakar Sahoo. The police said the trio were arrested on the basis of a directive from a local court.
Medal for cop
Cuttack: Chandrakanta Barik, an assistant sub-inspector of police, won gold in the artistic yoga event at the All-India Police Volleyball cluster in Ranchi, a police release said. The cluster includes events such as volleyball, basketball, handball and yoga. Barik had won silver last year's cluster in Vishakhapatnam.
Bombs hurled
Cuttack: Bike-borne goons hurled crude bombs at the house of contractor Rajkishor Raut in Niali on Saturday night. According to sources, the contractor has been receiving extortion calls for some time. Police have begun an investigation in the case.
Two drug dealers arrested
Balasore: Excise sleuths on Sunday seized 60gms brown sugar and arrested two peddlers. The accused, identified as Sanjay Mohanty, 25, and Santosh Patnaik, 27, from Haladi Padia, a slum under Laxmi Sagar police limits in the capital, were nabbed from Jaleswar after they procured the contraband from a trader. Excise officials said the market value of the contraband was Rs 6 lakh.
Cash loot
Sundargarh: Two bike-borne robbers allegedly looted Rs 2.65 lakh from a panchayat extension officer near Andhari panchayat under Biramitrapur police limits here. According to reports, Mickhail Logoon, who was in charge of Andhari and Kandobahal panchayats, was apprehended by the miscreants at Dhangrinacha Square by two masked bikers who looted the cash, meant for old-age pensions, at gunpoint.
Suicide attempt
Phulbani: Two students of an ashram school in Pakana village of Kandhamal district were admitted to a hospitalised in critical condition after they allegedly tried to commit suicide. They consumed iron tablets, sources said. The duo are undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital.
Students taken ill
Angul: At least 35 students of Kishore Nagar Junior College, Angul, fell ill after consuming rice and curry served to them as dinner in the hostel on Friday night. According to reports, the students have been admitted to Kishore Nagar Hospital for treatment. The condition of all the students are said to be stable.
Road condition
Rayagada: A woman had to be carried for nearly 10km on a sling as an ambulance failed to reach her village because of poor road connectivity. The incident occurred at Kalyansinghpur block of Rayagada district. The woman’s family members claimed that they had to cross a river and other hilly terrains, during their journey. Later, the woman was admitted to the hospital after the family members found an auto-rickshaw at Parsali village.
Undertrial nabbed
Balasore: A 21-year-old accused, who had escaped police custody before he was produced in a local court on Thursday, was apprehended on Sunday. The accused, identified by Balaram Ghodai of Sugo village, was initially arrested in connection with the kidnap of a minor girl. However, he had managed to escape from custody while he was on his
transit.
Puri temple
Puri: Devotees have complained about their inability to perform their rituals after the Shree Jagannath Temple administration set up barricades outside the shrine for Kartik month. Devotees said they were unable to perform rituals due to the extension of the barricades. The barricade was expanded near the main entrance for another 40ft to ensure smooth darshan.
