Rourkela, May 25: Students of the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, today staged a demonstration near the institute's administrative building, demanding action against a security officer for his alleged involvement in sexual acts on campus.
The students alleged that the accused had been exploiting women security personnel posted on the institute premises, harassing male guards and also issuing threats to them. The students had videographed the accused getting intimate with a female security personnel and handed over a copy of the video to the institute director.
Institute director Sunil Sarangi spoke to the students and assured them of action. He also constituted a committee to investigate into the allegations and submit a report within three days. The accused, a permanent employee of the institute, has been asked not to report for duty till the probe is completed.
Sarangi told The Telegraph: "The allegation brought against the security officer has been captured on camera. It is there for all to see." Speaking on the other charges, Sarangi said: "The committee will have to look into the allegations."
The students had shot videos in which the accused was allegedly found to be indulging in sexual acts with a female security staff member on campus. The video immediately went viral and the students, mostly from postgraduate departments, gathered in front of the BBA department and staged a demonstration, demanding justice for the woman staff member and action against the accused.
In December, the students had demonstrated against the same security officer. "At that time, he was accused of misbehaving with the students. He was let off with a warning," a student said.
The accused, however, dismissed the allegation as "false and fabricated". "The video clippings they are showing are false and this has been done to tarnish my image," he said.
