Bhubaneswar, Sept. 13: Odissi and Bharatnatyam performances were featured in an event organised by a dance institute at Rabindra Mandap.

The programme, Sangam, was the eighth edition of the annual dance fest organised yesterday by the Art Vision.

The production by Art Vision titled “Kaala-time bound” was a celebration of the pace of time and the impactful events it has unfolded over the years.

“It is an ode to different dimensions of time, its mysterious beginning and end, its cyclic and linear movements as well as its aspects of creator and destroyer,” said Illeana Citaristi, who choreographed the performance.

With patterns of movement on stage, the artistes displayed various Odissi steps and postures. As the music, composed by Annada Prasanna Patnaik, kept varying from soft to thunderous, the dancers kept pace with the changing rhythm. Dancer Saswat Joshi performed as part of the troupe. Devdas Chhotray wrote the lyrics.

Following the Odissi recital, artistes of Kalavardhini Sankul in Pune presented a Bharatnatyam recital. Dancer Sucheta Chapekar and her troupe depicted the Ardhanariswara or half female-half male aspect of Lord Shiv with expressional dance and rhythmic movements. The choreography included various segments of Bharatnatyam such as Swaramala, Sahitya, Tillana and Tirmanam. Satish Krishnamurti, Sivaprasad and B. Anantaram composed the music.

“Both the dance forms featured interesting concepts. The artistes gave impressive performances and we got to see a wide range of segments of the classical dances in one choreography,” said Jharana, who was present among the audience.

Citaristi, the founder of Art Vision and organiser of the concert, released her book on Odisha’s martial practices and dance forms titled Traditional Martial Practices In Odisha.

“Sangam is a confluence of different dance forms,” said Citaristi.

“The festival is conceived as an offering of new and exclusive choreographic compositions in two different dance styles. Every year, two dance forms come together on the same platform. While Odissi is a constant factor, the other classical style varies every year. This year, apart from Odissi by Art Vision, we chose Bharatnatyam by the Kalavardhini Sankul troupe from Pune for the city audience,” she said.
