Berhampur, Jan. 10: Twenty-five members of Balasore Royals, who have hit the road with their Royal Enfield motorcycles to create road safety awareness, vroomed past the town today.
The members of the Balasore's Royal Enfield Club, donning helmets and black jerkins, are on a mission to spread the message of road safety across the state.
Junior motor vehicles inspector of Ganjam Bijaya Kumar Behuria, deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Thakur Prasad Patra and inspector-in-charge (traffic) Kulamani Sethi welcomed the group in Berhampur.
"We started our journey from Balasore on January 9 and reached Berhampur on Monday night after passing through Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack and Khurda. We will cover Rayagada, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Balangir, Boudh and Nayagarh before returning to Balasore on January 13 covering a total distance of 1,800 kilometres," said president of Balasore Royals Satyananda Das.
"We are distributing leaflets and pamphlets among the public on various road safety measures. We must ensure the safety of those who hit the road by ensuring that they abide by the traffic rules and road safety measures. Our focus is particularly to curb drunk driving, speeding and using mobile phones while driving," he said.
The motorcyclists are out on roads only during the daytime.
"Many onlookers wonder why are we on the bikes in the shivering cold. We will experience colder conditions when we go to places such as Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Balangir and Boudh. But, we are on a mission and will stop only after reaching Balasore, from where we started," Das said. The members of the group also shared their experience with students of City College at Ambapua.
