Bhubaneswar: The Government Railway Police arrested recovered gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs 5 lakh from a robber they arrested from the a slum near the station here on Saturday.
The railway police's special task force nabbed the robber - Rabi Nayak - who, sources said, robbed a woman passenger inside the station during the early hours of Friday. The police swung into action based on the complaint made by Divya Reddy, the passenger.
Sources said the woman was coming to Bhubaneswar from Vishakapatnam via the Konark Express.
She arrived at the station around 4am on Friday. The train was entering the station when the robber snatched her bag and fled.
Reddy gave the robber a chase, but in vain, before lodging a complaint.
The Vishakapatnam resident was traveling with Pardeep Kumar Sahu of Bhubaneswar for a wedding. When the train was approaching the station, one person snatched her handbag and jumped off the train, Reddy said in her complaint.
Based on the complaint, the special task force launched a manhant and nabbed the accused.
The cops recovered five tolas of gold, silver candlelights, silver bowl, a mobile phone and Rs 10,000 in cash besides Reddy's ID proofs.
"We nabbed the robber from a nearby slum. We produced him in court on Saturday," said a rail police officer.
Sources said the woman passenger chased the robber to the nearby slum from where the police arrested Nayak.
"The stolen ornaments have been recovered and returned to the passenger," the officer said.
"We suspect that Nayak had tailed the woman for a while before taking a chance to rob her."

Odisha director-general of police R.P. Sharma on Saturday launched a dedicated dashboard that will be used by senior police officers to monitor investigations on a daily basis. The dashboard integrates the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems programme, which is under implementation, to make necessary information available to senior officers at the click of a button. The district superintendents of police will also get daily crime data on their computers.
