Cuttack, June 11: The municipal corporation will shortly come up with a road directory to chart the course for a master plan for a slum free city.

An official of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation said the directory, a maiden venture of the civic body, would form the basis for preparing the blueprint for increasing mobility and improvement in public transport infrastructure along with other civic amenities in areas where new habitation, including residential zones, had come up.

Official records show that the city, spread over around 192sqkm, has a road network of 1043km.

While the corporation is in charge of around 78 per cent of the roads, the rest are in areas under the roads and buildings division of the works department, the irrigation department and the Cuttack Development Authority.

However, the civic body has no updated information on the entire existing road network vis-à-vis public transport infrastructure across the city.

“The road directory project has been undertaken as a part of the preparation of master plan for the slum free city project. We have already asked all relevant departments to provide up-to-date information on the roads under their control and road connectivity situation in other areas, especially in slums that had come up in lands under their custody. Preparation of the road directory will be completed after receipt of the information,” municipal commissioner Nihar Ranjan Mohapatra told The Telegraph.

“Convergence of information on the roads under the control of other departments will also help the civic administration in tiding over the chaos in administering periodic repair and maintenance,” Mohapatra said.

Corporation officials said the directory would have information on the length, size, width and category of roads along with various maps, charts, photographs and illustrations presenting an exact representation of each and every road of the city.
