The cult Sambalpuri folk song, Rangabati, reached a new level of popularity with Odia singers Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty jamming to the peppy tune at the latest season of popular musical show MTV Coke Studio. It has over six lakh views on YouTube and social networking sites are abuzz with people sharing the video repeatedly. But, debates stormed a day after the song was aired with the original makers of the songs serving a legal notice to the show producers for copyright infringement. The Telegraph spoke to veteran music directors, filmmakers and lyricists of the state to know their opinion on remixes and the entire hullabaloo surrounding the Rangabati remake

At the end of the day, a song is made for the audience. So, we should be proud that a classic song has been taken to a huge platform by the young brigade. We should be proud of it instead of creating unnecessary commotion

Swarup Nayak, music director

I feel permission from the original songwriter and composer should have been sought. Moreover, when we are attempting the remake of a masterpiece, we should ensure that no one feels it is disgraceful. If that happens, the entire initiative loses charm

Nizam, lyricist

I laud the initiatives of the people who have tried to present the song on a national platform. I think there is no point fussing over the issue and it is just an attempt to garner attention

Prem Anand, music director

We are quite sentimental about our culture and the fact that the song has been now reached a greater height with the show has made us proud. But on the other side, I feel they should have taken consent of the original makers of the song. I have also used the song in one of my films and one should be careful about these things

Nila Madhab Panda, filmmaker

The remixed song lacks the charm of the original one and it appeared to have been made for commercial purposes. Moreover, they should have involved the original makers in the process

Prashant Padhi, music director

There is no problem in giving a contemporary touch to folk songs because it gives a different angle to the music. I was really happy to know that the popular song would be presented in anew avatar in the show. People are criticising the presentation style but the song has been earlier attempted in a number of platforms so I don’t think there is much to bother about
