Bhubaneswar, Aug. 26: Young singers of Gurukul Gitanjali cultural institution presented a number of seasonal ragas at a concert held at Jayadev Bhavan in the city.
Rendering traditional compositions in Hindustani classical vocal, the artistes of the institute captivated the audience at the annual function of the music school. Thirty-five artistes, including around 30 vocalists, presented Dhrupad on the evening raga Kalyaan.
The students also presented solo renditions on ragas such as Desh, played during monsoon, the late evening raga Bihag and others such as Kedar, Malkauns and Bhupali among others. All the ragas were rendered on jhaap tala and teen taal. Ten-year-old Amita Das Mohapatra won the hearts of listeners with her recital.
“The repertoire was wonderful and allowed us to enjoy pure classical music while it rained outside. We relaxed listening to the music,” said Manoj Kumar Panigrahi, a member of the audience.
Musician and vocalist Chittaranjan Pani, the president of Gurukul Gitanjali, also enthralled the audience by singing a composition based on raga Chandrakauns. He sang well-known song More Shyaam salone, a song for Lord Krishna.
“It is important to groom the younger generation in pure classical music. At the same time, there has to be a group of listeners to encourage young talents. We conduct this event every year to cultivate an inclination towards classical music among residents of the city,” said Pani, one of the organisers of the musical programme.
