Berhampur, Sept. 22: A post-poll clash between workers of the BJD and the Congress left 12 persons injured and three houses damaged in Gopalpur here today.
“The supporters of both the parties indulged in physical assault and brick batting. However, the situation is under control now. We have deployed four platoons of police in the area to avoid any untoward incident,” said Harihar Pani, sub-divisional police officer, Berhampur Sadar.
The trouble started at the time of counting of votes on September 20, when two Congress supporters, B. Narasinghalu and K. Babaji of Guna Sahi, allegedly abused and assaulted BJD supporter B. Rabi of Bada Sahi on the sea beach during afternoon.
Later, a group of Congress supporters allegedly went to Rabi’s home and abused his family members. They also misbehaved Rabi’s sister the next day.
“This prompted the BJD supporters to retaliate,” said A. Janikiram, BJD leader and outgoing chairman of Gopalpur Notified Area Council.
However, Congress supporter B. Narasinghalu said he did not know about the attack. “This allegation is baseless,” he said.
“The BJD supporters have attacked and ransacked our houses after it won polls in the Gopalpur NAC,” said Congress leader and former chairman of the Gopalpur NAC Sashi Bhusan Mahanty.
The police have registered a case on the complaint lodged by Congress supporter B. Narasinghalu., while BJD supporters lodged three counter complaints.
