Bhubaneswar, May 6: To strengthen relationship with the people, commissionerate police today introduced a closed user group (CUG) plan to provide permanent contact numbers to each police station in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
Specific numbers have been allotted to senior police officials, including police commissioner, deputy police commissioner of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and inspectors in-charge.
Though the website of the commissionerate police (www.bhubaneswarcuttackpolice.gov.in) provides mobile numbers of inspector in-charge of each police station and assistant commissioner of police, it changes when the official is transferred.
However, under the new plan the number will be related to the post rather than the person. Therefore, even if there is a rejig, the numbers will remain the same.
Police commissioner R.P Sharma said CUG numbers had been allotted to 43 police stations functioning under the commissionerate police.
“These will be made available to the people who can contact the concerned inspectors in-charge in case of emergency,” said Sharma.
The police have roped in BSNL for the service.
“With a permanent mobile number, citizens can now contact officials of a particular police station irrespective of their transfers. This will build a healthy relationship between the cops and the people,” said an official.
Earlier, the police had launched its Facebook page in November 2013 for receiving suggestions and feedbacks from citizens. The social interactive platform, so far, has received more than 12,000 likes and residents are also posting complaints regarding illegal sale of liquor and traffic problems in the city.
Besides, the police had also launched a mobile-based application for smart phone users in January this year. This app enables people to download verification forms and licences for hotels, shops and arms on their phones.
“This phone number initiative is another step towards ensuring participation of public in policing.
