Bhubaneswar: The municipal corporation has finally come up with a master plan to improve the drainage system in and around Nayapalli to prevent waterlogging.
According to the new drainage masterplan of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for Nayapalli, the storm water will be redistributed to three new drains. It will then be discharged into Nayapalli Haza, which is an old water tank and has been restored last week.
The water from Nayapalli Haza will then be directed into natural drainage channel No. 10.
As a large patch of the land adjoining Nayapalli Haza is unauthorisedly occupied, steps will be taken to rid it of encroachers and include part of it in the water body.
On the other hand, a portion of natural drainage channel No. 10, where waters from Nayapalli and its vicinity will be discharged, will be maintained from its origin point up to its meeting point on Bidyut Marg near The World shopping mall.
To maintain the width of the drainage channel, "stop construction" notice will be issued to buildings and real-estate developers taking up projects around it.
The drainage division will prepare a plan to develop the Nayapalli Haza by creating floating wetlands, sedimentation tanks and aerators. This will ensure treated water flowed into natural drainage channel No. 10.
Of the 10 natural drains, the natural drainage channel No. 10 is the second longest in the city with a length of 5.48km. It runs through Madhusudan Nagar, Bhoi Nagar and Satya Nagar before merging into Gangua Nullah.
At present the drainage channel is plagued with encroachment problems. "We are going to be strict and will spare no violations of the drainage channel. We made efforts to restore the drains in the past, but failed due to repeated encroachment. We will evict all of them," said mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.
On Friday an enforcement squad proceeded to Kharavela Nagar to remove encroachers on natural drainage channel No. 5 that is connected to natural drainage channel No. 10 near Acharya Vihar. During the drive, 17 cabins, four polythene sheds, six trolley rickshaw, a 25ft boundary wall of a biscuit factory were removed and demolished.
To add further strength to the drainage division, the BMC on Friday decided to create three sub-divisions under singular control.
The sub-divisions will work on the drainage master plan for the entire city. Under the plan, 10drainage channels will cover a 100km, while the total length of secondary and tertiary drains will be 400km.
