Bhubaneswar, April 22: The state government has decided to set up eight advanced skill development training institutes for making young people ready for the job market.
The institutes will be set up in Angul, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Jeypore, Balangir, Jharsuguda and Rourkela to impart skill training to around two lakh youths over five years, said technical education secretary L.N. Gupta after a meeting of the Odisha Skill Development Society last evening.
Under the project, unemployed IT diploma-holders, engineers, general and polytechnic graduates will be imparted skill training in 142 disciplines and 12 priority sectors.
The courses will be designed in line with the National Skill Quality Framework to facilitate smooth migration from general education to the vocational training.
While the government would bear the expenses of setting up the six institutes, the remaining two would be taken up in the public-private partnership mode. A sum of Rs 1,051 crore will be spent for the purpose.
"It has been decided to set up eight such institutes in various parts of the state. Six institutes would function in demonstration mode with major investment from the government and two in the public-private partnership mode," Gupta said.
It is being planned to start the training programme in temporary accommodations till completion of civil works.
Advanced and finishing skill training will also be imparted to 50,000 ITI diploma-holders, and 5,000 candidates will be supported for self-employment.
An executive committee has been formed under the development commissioner's chairmanship to implement the project. The meeting decided to form two sub-committees on civil constructions and procurements to look into the technical and financial aspects.
The society would be the nodal agency for implementation of the project and a general body has been formed under the chief secretary's chairmanship for the purpose with representatives from the banks, industries, Centre and the agencies concerned. The state's development commissioner heads the executive committee.
