Bhubaneswar: Police have decided to set up one model police station each in every district of the state.

Director-general of police R.P. Sharma made the announcement while inaugurating the three-day senior police officers' conference in the city on Tuesday.

Sharma said he had also asked the district police superintendents to propose the names of model police stations by March 25. He said the features of the model police stations would include top infrastructure, skilled manpower, high rate of conviction, people-friendly approach, effective crime control and quality as well as expeditious investigations. "We will accord the status of model police station after examining the parameters. These will be provided with adequate manpower," said Sharma.

Sources said the model police stations would deal with complainants in more sophisticated manner and would have officials having good communication skills. Besides, adequate female cops will also be deployed at these police stations to deal with complaints related to crime against women.

Sharma also said the state police were also planning to come up with counselling centres for women victims.

In 2014, Madhyam (women support centre) had started operating in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar for counselling of women victims of domestic violence and other crimes.

"The centres are created with trained and expert counsellors, and I am happy to say that these are functioning properly. We would like to come up with similar counselling centres in districts where crime against women is more," said Sharma. One thirty eight senior police officers will attend the conference.
