Bhubaneswar, Nov. 10: The techniques of ancient Kalingan temple architecture will be used to construct the National Institute of Science Education and Research (Niser) campus coming up near Jatni.

“Design ideas have been taken from the Orissa temple architecture,” said Niser director T. K. Chandrashekar.

Calcutta-based ace architect Dipankar Roy has been entrusted with the responsibility to design the campus.

“The designer has visited more than 100 temples to study their architectural patterns and implement them in his designs,” he said

“However, no specific temple design is being imitated. There will be more than 119 buildings, and each will be different from the other,” Chandrashekar said.

The boundary wall is being constructed right now. “Laterite stone has been procured for the boundary wall. Also, sandstone and khandolite stones will be used for construction. There will be 2.5 metres of barbed-wire fencing over the boundary wall,” he said.

The construction work on the permanent campus started on a 300-acre site on July 21. The Rs 457crore project would include a prayer hall on the hilltop, five schools of different specialties, 11 hostels, healthcare centre and guesthouse.

The master plan is ready and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has been entrusted with the construction.

“We will construct the academic block, administrative building and hostels in the first phase. The project will be completed by July 2014,” said Chandrasekhar, adding that Rs 515 crores had been earmarked for the first phase of work.
