Naveen seeks support

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday wrote to chief ministers of all the coastal states and deputy governors of Union territories seeking their support against the proposed new port bill to be introduced by the Centre. Naveen in his letter said stated “the state will lose their control over the ports if a new bill comes in place of the Indian Ports Act 1908 and Port Trust Act, 1963.” e said that the state would no longer be able to decide the places of new ports coming in their respective states.

New chief

Bhubaneswar: Padmini Shekhar Deo has been appointed chairperson of the Western Orissa Development Council. Her appointment has received the approval of chief minster Naveen Patnaik. She was earlier the chairperson of Mahila Vikas Samavaya Nigam.

Tax evasion

Bhubaneswar: An inquiry by the Special Investigative Team of the state vigilance has revealed that nine of the leading steel companies have evaded sales tax worth Rs 3,164 crore. The companies include Vedanta Aluminium Limited, Bhusan Power and Steel limited, Visa Steels and Jindal Stainless Steel. The team has filed a report after assessment of the sales of the companies in 14 states. “After getting the assessment report action will be taken against the errant companies,” said finance minister Prafulla Ghadei.

Corporal

Bhubaneswar: The school and mass education department has ordered an inquiry into the hospitalisation of a 15-year-old girl student of Kandhamal district after she was allegedly handed out corporal punishment. The student, Haripriya Meher, is undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. She was allegedly asked by her teacher to do 200 sit-ups.

Pollution

Bhubaneswar: As per the instructions issued by the State Pollution Control Board, authorities have snapped power supply to Bhusan Steel and Power in Sambalpur. The authorities also shut down the cold rolling mill.
