New Delhi: Eminent professor of economics, Srirangam Srinivasa Rao died at the Gangaram Hospital here on Friday. He was 72. He was ill for a while. He is survived by wife Bharathi Rao, a son and daughter. Having spent three decades in Sambalpur, Rao shot to limelight earlier this year. He along with retired political science teacher G. Hargopal and activist Dandapani Mohanty had mediated between the state government and the Maoists to secure the release of abducted Malkangiri collector R.V. Krishna and junior engineer Pabitra Majhi. Following negotiations, the state government had slowed down its operation entitled “Green Hunt” against the Maoists. Keonjhar/Jajpur: At least two persons died in separate incidents after house walls collapsed due to incessant rain on Friday. In Keonjhar one Rajan Mahakuda of Seranda village died after one of the walls fell on him while he was sleeping. In another incident Biccha Baral (55) of Rathia village under the Dharmasala police limits died due to wall collapse. The incident occurred while the old woman was sleeping in her thatched house on Friday afternoon. Sambalpur: One person was seriously injured in a shootout in the Kanjori area here on Friday. As the condition of the person deteriorated further, he was later shifted to the S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Police are probing into the incident. Bhubaneswar: Eleven persons allegedly involved in illegal transportation of iron ore from Koida region on the outskirts of the steel city were arrested on Friday. Police also seized 42 tonnes of iron ore from their custody. Cuttack: Five members of a robbers’ gang were arrested from different parts of the city on Friday. The accused have been identified as Ashok Balram Das, Bijay Singh, Sukant Sahoo, Manoj Nayak and Chandrakant Nayak. olice said the persons were arrested in connection with a snatching case in which a gold chain of a woman was looted from Hazari Lane on June 11.
