Berhampur, Dec. 17: Olympian and Arjun awardee weightlifter K. Ravi Kumar, who is presently posted as the deputy superintendent of police here, today alleged that the Berhampur Stadium officer-in-charge, Satchindra Majhi, had humiliated him on Thursday.
Kumar said Majhi did not allow him to enter the stadium when he had gone there with a police team of budding weightlifters.
"I was shocked by Majhi's behaviour and requested Ganjam collector Prem Chandra Chowdhary to accord permission to my police team to enter the stadium," said Kumar, adding that he would not enter the stadium till permitted by the collector.
"I am preparing the police team for the coming senior weightlifting championship at Nagarkoil in Tamil Nadu, and we were going to the stadium in the morning almost every day for the past few days."
"But, Majhi did not allow us to enter on Thursday and insulted us. He also asked each one of us to submit our personal details, including our identity cards," he said.
Majhi, however, said the entire thing happened because of a misunderstanding. "Five weightlifters from the Odisha Police team have been doing physical exercise in the stadium for the past one month. I have never prohibited them from entering. I know Kumar very well as he has excelled in weightlifting and brought many laurels to the state and the country. We are going to issue identity cards to all the sportsmen, who regularly visit the stadium from January. I had requested a member of the police team to give their biodata, excluding that of Kumar, so that their identity cards could also be issued. I think he has misquoted me and Kumar misunderstood," said Majhi.
Kumar started his career in weightlifting at the national level in 2005 when he took part in the Weightlifting Sub-Junior National Championship at Bhilai in 62kg category and won bronze. He bagged a silver medal in Junior Asian Championship in Jordan in 2007. He set five Commonwealth Games records in New Delhi in 2010. He won a bronze medal in the Senior Asian Championship in China in 2011 and a silver medal in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The state government offered him the post of deputy superintendent of police in June in recognition of his excellence in sports.
The government also awarded Rs 10 lakh to Kumar for his success in the Commonwealth Games, 2010, Rs 20 lakh for 2014 Games and Rs 1 lakh as Biju Patnaik Award. The Centre has also awarded him the Arjun Award in 2011.
