Suicide bid after theft charge

Jajpur: A 50-year-old man, arrested on charges of theft, allegedly attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a blade during interrogation by police at his house at Bhitartamania village within the limits of Kalinga Nagar police station on Friday.

According to police, Badal Hembrum was arrested in connection with a theft case on Thursday night. He was taken to his house by the police to recover stolen items from there. Immediately after entering his house, the accused tried to slit his throat with a blade. When he did not come out of his house, the police entered the house to find him lying in a pool of blood.

BJD undecided

Bhubaneswar: The BJD leadership has not yet made up its mind to whose favour the party MPs would cast their vote during the vice-presidential election. Before leaving for Delhi, chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik told reporters on Friday that consultations were on as to whom his party would vote for the post of the Vice-President. Naveen is likely to meet a number of leaders during his Delhi visit.

Power crisis

Bhubaneswar: The power crisis in the state has deepened as seven units of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and one unit of the Odisha Power Grid Corporation (OPGC) became defunct on Friday. Short-supply of coal has badly hit the NTPC units. Out of the state's requirement of 3200MW unit of electricity everyday, it is getting only 2300MW.

Rural project

Bhubaneswar: Chief secretary Bijay Patnaik on Friday asked the district collectors and project directors of district rural development agencies to identify clusters of activities in which people of a district have core competence, while addressing a workshop on the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). en districts - Deogarh, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Maryurbhanj - have been identified as focused districts for NRLM activities. All the districts have been asked to submit their action plans

Cyclone

Bhubaneswar: Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea as a low pressure has been formed over the northwest side of the Bay of Bengal. Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation, heavy rainfall would occur at a few places in the next 48 hours. During the last two days, the coastal belt witnessed heavy rainfall. Normal life was also thrown out of gear in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack because of incessant rainfall.

Lok adalat

Bhubaneswar: District-level Lok Adalat was held on Civil Court campus here for disposing of pending power theft cases according to Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, in the last week of June. The Special Court (Electricity) had issued notices to the accused persons in 63 cases. But, only 16 accused turned up for disposal of the cases in the Lok Adalat. hese cases are all relating to unauthorised abstraction of energy by hooking.
