The annual conclave of The Rural Managers’ Association of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, (RMAX) was held last week on the theme “Emerging trends in the rural sector”. Eminent speakers from across the industries and from various domains ranging from research to corporate to corporate social responsibility attended it. The speakers stressed on the skills of a rural manager and the upcoming opportunities that hard work and dedication can open up. Discussions over the various projects and initiatives by Coca-Cola “Support My School”, “ThumsUp Being Human VEER”, “Unnati”, also took place. The discussion ended with an interactive question-answer round.
HR conclave
Themed “Psychological Contract - A Competitive Advantage”, the 5th National HR Conclave was organised at KIIT School of Management last week. The theme is important from an employer-employee relationship perspective in today’s dynamic market conditions, said the dignitaries to the students. They stressed on unwritten and undefined understanding between an employer and the employee, which forms a key part of their relationship. On the occasion, corporate leaders, academics and students released a souvenir containing articles and messages. A panel discussion and about 10 workshops were conducted at the event.
Adding another feather
The National Institute of Fashion Technology , Bhubaneswar, added another department keeping in mind the demand of the subject and Odisha’s rich art and culture. A full-fledged department for fashion design was inaugurated recently. Two new buildings of the departments of ceramics and mining engineering were inaugurated at National Institute of Technology Rourkela, this week.
Good Samaritans
Souls for Solace, the social welfare society of IIT, Bhubaneswar, in association with WE4YOU and Honda organised Children’s Fest-2014 last week. The event included a dance competition, a fancy dress competition, musical chairs and a drawing competition for the underprivileged children. Souls for Solace, a society of IIT, Bhubaneswar, ensured that the event held without any problems.
Lukewarm celebrations
Ganesh Puja, which is usually celebrated with much fanfare in colleges, was somewhat subdued this year, most likely due to the fact that the elections are weighing heavily on the students’ minds. At BJB College, the puja was jointly celebrated at the Arts block. The pandal wore a deserted look, with not a student in sight. The scene was almost similar at R D Women’s College. Candidates in most colleges and universities have already begun preparations for the elections. However, the Biju Pattanaik College of Hotel Management and Tourism celebrated Nuakhai Bhetghat with zest. The students had prepared a sumptuous lunch for faculty members and others guests.
Breaking the ice
DAV School of Business Management organised its 8th orientation programme last week. Writer and poet Haraprasad Das was the guest of honour. The new batch of management and commerce students took an oath to follow the quality education imparted at the institute. The meeting ended with a business game meant to break the ice and also enhance confidence among the freshers. A similar programme took place for first-year students of MKCG Medical College, Berhampur.
Foundation day
The Central University of Odisha observed its 6th Foundation Day in Koraput last week. Vice-chancellor of the university, professor Mohammad Miyan presided over the meeting. After the meeting, guests gave away the prizes to the meritorious students and research scholars. Debate, quiz, sports, painting, clay modelling and rangoli-making competitions were held as a part of the celebrations. The event concluded with a cultural programme performed by the students of the university. The foundation day of NCERT was recently celebrated at the Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar. The theme for this year’s celebration was Gender Inclusion. A number of competitions such as poster making, slogan writing and skit plays were organised on the occasion. A K Das, vice-chancellor of Utkal University, addressed the students on the occasion, and emphasised on the need for focus and determination in order to achieve success. A number of cultural programmes were also and a souvenir, too, was released.
Animation course
Keeping in mind the increasing interest and aspiration among students in the state for making a career in animation and multimedia studies, city-based Cybertech Institute of Management and Information Technology (CIMIT) launched ‘CIMIT Animation’ offering various multimedia and animation courses including diploma in animation and BSc in animation. The courses are affiliated under Karnataka State Open University.
Safe journey
Students of NIT, Rourkela, and Padmanava College of Engineering, Rourkela, in collaboration with their Rotaract Clubs organised an awareness programme on road safety. They walked from Birsa Chawk to Ispat Market Chawk on Sunday. The awareness rally was named “Suraksha: An initiative to make the journey safe. During the rally, pamphlets were distributed among the commuters, which had basic information about dos and don’ts regarding road traffic safety. About 600 participants thanked commuters, who followed traffic rules, by pasting a salute sticker on their vehicle.
Discussing Maoists
A seminar on the topic “Maoist activities in India and its impact on Odisha” were held recently in the Remuna College, Balasore. It was organised jointly by the department of political science and history. The speakers said that poverty, exploitation and imbalance regional growth are a few causes for rise of Maoism.
Students clash
Six students were injured after two groups of students clashed on Bhanja Bihar campus in Berhampur over tearing of a banner to welcome the first-year students on Monday. A platoon of police force has been deployed on the university campus to avoid any untoward incident. The students clashed when they returned from Gopalpur after the Ganesh idol immersion. “We have informed the police about the incident,” said Manmath Padhi, registrar of the university.
Finance studies
The National Stock Exchange has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Sri University in Bhubaneswar to launch a one-year postgraduate diploma in financial markets. The course will start from the 2015-16 academic session and classes will be held on the varsity campuses in Bhubaneswar. Students can study this course either as a full-time programme, or as a part-time one. The full-time course will have 24 papers and the part-time weekend course will have 16 papers. Students will learn about the Indian financial markets and NSE will provide its expertise on topics such as capital market operations, fundamental analysis, technical analysis, operation and risk management in financial markets, options trading strategies module and others. The university will provide expertise on subjects including financial institutions and markets, foreign exchange management and financial valuation and modelling.
