One held for fraud

Bhubaneswar: Nayagarh police detained a person for making fraudulent calls to Nayagarh superintendent of police Ashish Kumar Singh posing himself as the inspector general of police in Punjab police. The cops  detained Ashok Naik of Daspalla and also found a visiting card in the name of Ishwar C. Sharma, inspector general of police, Punjab, and other identity cards from Nayak. Police said that Nayak called Ashish to get some work done.

Liquor drive

Bhubaneswar: Police  arrested 18 bootleggers during a weeklong drive, which concluded on Sunday. The cops have registered 15 cases and seized 187 litres of illicit distilled liquor, 14 litres of country-made liquor and 254 bottles of India-made foreign liquor. Police said that the drive was conducted against the illegal liquor keeping in mind the upcoming festive season.

Fake robbery

Bhubaneswar: A couple was arrested for allegedly faking a robbery at their house and killing a security guard when he resisted them in Burla in Sambalpur district. The cops on Sunday arrested Karan Singh, 20, and his wife Sherjit Kaur, 23 and recovered cash of Rs 75,000 and gold jewellery from the accused. Police said that Karan, son of Burla-based contractor Ashok Singh, had committed robbery in his father house and when the security guard resisted the couple had strangulated him to death.

Youth killed

Bhubaneswar: A 24-year-old youth was allegedly killed and three others were injured in a clash between two families in Jatni on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Anup Behera. Police said that a group of people attacked the family members of the deceased with sticks and stones.

College

Cuttack: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik will inaugurate Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput on Monday. The admissions have been completed and preparations are on for the first academic session, which starts on Monday.
