CM’s order for SPs

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik asked superintendents of police of all 30 districts to implement community policing effectively in their respective areas and give priority to addressing grievances of women and people belonging to weaker sections of society. aveen instructed them to provide FIR copies to people within 24 hours of their lodging a complaint besides apprising them of the “Ama Police” (our police) system to reach out to more people.

Molest cuffs

Sambalpur: Police arrested a 40-year-old man on charges of sexually exploiting girl inmates of a local orphanage run by him. The accused, Upendra Das, 40, was looking after the Baba Deep Jyoti Anath Ashram at Naxapali in Dhanupali police limits. The matter came to light when two girls, of Class V and Class VII, alleged that Das had been sexually abusing them for over a month.

Docs’ demand

Berhampur: The Odisha Medical Services Association (OMSA) has vehemently opposed the state government’s proposal for extending the age of superannuation fund of doctors belonging to Odisha Medical Services (OMS) from 60 years to 62 to tackle the shortage of doctors in the cadre. Association president Nirakara Bhatta said implementation of Dynamic Assured Career Progression or time scale promotion for OMS cadre doctors could improve the doctor scarcity crisis.

Evaluation

Bhubaneswar: The first round of evaluation of Plus Two answer scripts began on Wednesday at 47 centres across the state and will be completed by April 12. Around 12,000 evaluators have been engaged for the purpose. The second round will take place between April 14 and 22. Answer sheets of residential college students will be checked at special venues. he results are likely to be declared by the first week of June. The Rayagada Autonomous College evaluation centre inadvertently received Urdu answer sheets instead of the IRPM papers of commerce.

Suicide bid

Cuttack: A journalism student of Ravenshaw University allegedly attempted suicide by taking rat poison on Wednesday afternoon and is undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital. Sources said Bidhanshu Tripathy, a final-year postgraduate student, took the step after varsity authorities did not pay heed to a demonstration by him and his classmates for fulfilment of various demands in front of the registrar’s office.

Injured

Bhubaneswar: A man was severely injured after he fell on the railway tracks near Lingaraj Vihar station in front of a Puri-Cuttack passenger train. The injured was identified as Manoj Kumar Das, 40, of Gandamunda. He suffered injuries to his hands and legs.

Bombs seized

Bhubaneswar: Nayapali police arrested one person and seized two crude bombs from him in Saliasahi on Tuesday night. The accused, Haria Naik of Nayagarh, was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected. The accused was making bombs in his house and threatening to occupy a plot of government land.

Rescued

Bhubaneswar: The Khandagiri police on Wednesday rescued 10 children aged between 13 and 17 years employed in construction on the AIIMS campus at Sijua and detained a labour contractor. The boys were from Laxmipur in Koraput. Following a complaint from Laxmipur MLA Jhina Hikaka, the police rescued these child labourers who had been promised wages of Rs 200 a day. However, these boys had not been paid any wage for the past month and a half. The cops handed over the boys to the legislator and detained labour contractor Ranjit Swain. Investigations are on to know how the boys came to the capital.

Strike ends

Bhubaneswar: Home guards on Wednesday ended their 15-day protest after a discussion with the higher authorities. Around 17,750 home guards across the state were on strike and had ceased work since March 20 demanding reinstatement of retrenched home guards and Grade IV employee status. On March 31, cops charged and forcibly removed them from the protest site on Mahatma Gandhi Marg. The home guards will join work from Thursday.
