Cuttack: Police have arrested a person in connection with a jewellery shop break-in at Purighat police station area by using the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage of a nude man at the crime scene.

Amar Singh alias Dabu , 20, has been charged with house breaking and theft.

The CCTV footage found the involvement of Dabu in the break-in that occurred at the jewellery shop at Firingi Bazaar on the night of May 11. The police said that the accused had smashed the skylight to enter the shop.

The police had started probing the case after one Srikanta Samanta reported at the Purighat police station on May 13 that unidentified persons had stolen jewellery from his shop.

"During display of the CCTV footage, it came to light that a person entered the shop in naked position by breaking the skylight of the shop. The person decamped after stealing gold jewelleries and cash," said deputy commissioner of police Akhileswar Singh.

"We identified the burglar, raided his house at Singh Gali on Gopal Jew Lane on Wednesday and arrested him," Singh said.

"He has confessed to have committed the crime and also gave back the stolen gold articles. However, he had already exhausted the cash," Singh said.

Dabu is a history-sheeter, who has burgled several shops in areas under Purighat and Badambadi police station limits in the last few years. Dabu used to break into the shops he targeted by breaking the skylights.
