Cuttack, Oct. 15: Normality has finally returned to Ravenshaw University which was on the edge following a clash between two student groups last evening.
Varsity officials today brokered peace between the two student groups which were involved in the clash. The clash left a junior student injured.
A meeting of the Residence Committee was convened by the Ravenshaw authorities this afternoon to find an amicable solution to the incident.
“A peaceful solution has been reached. Both the parties were called and they have agreed to mutually end the deadlock,” said Nachiketa Das, hostel warden and dean of administration of the university.
Das said the meeting was convened by the Residence Committee and was attended by officials comprising chairman of the council of deans Chandi Prasad Nanda, media officer Netaji Abhinandan, coordinator of foreign students Laxmikant Mishra, students union representatives and both the student groups involved in yesterday’s incident.
Biranchi Narayan Satpathy, a junior student, had sustained minor injuries after he was allegedly attacked by a few Afghanistani students around 5pm yesterday. Trouble erupted after there was an altercation between a group of Plus Two students of the junior college and some Afghan students, both of whom were sitting at the varsity’s parking lot.
“It was actually an incident between two students and was not a clash between student groups. But, we are happy that it has been resolved amicably,” said registrar Smarapriya Mishra.
Mishra said both the student groups were apologetic for their behaviour and had promised not to indulge in any further violence.
Attack
In another incident, two persons were injured after they were allegedly attacked by a group over past rivalry last night. The injured have been identified as Premranjan Mohapatra, 26, and Rashmi Ranjan Das, 25.
Police sources said that both Mohapatra and Das were allegedly attacked by some hoodlums near Jhanjirmangla temple around 9.45pm last night.
“The attack was a fallout of the ongoing dispute over rivalry between two student union leader groups at Netaji Subhas Memorial City College that had been lingering for the last couple of years,” said Das.
