| The Bhubaneswar District Carrom Association (BDCA) is hosting a carrom coaching camp for players and umpires of the state at the Navodaya Youth Association, Unit I. The camp began on Tuesday and will continue till May 9. The president of BDCA, Sunil Patnaik, said 32 players and 16 coaches were being trained at the coaching camp. The umpires will also appear for an examination and successful participants will be chosen as district panel umpires. |
Finish line
There was some good news for the state from the 16th Federation Cup athletics meet on in Patiala, Punjab. In the women’s 100m race of this national senior athletics championship, ace sprinter from Odisha Srabani Nanda grabbed a silver with her efficient timing, though finishing closely behind was Manisha of Haryana.
Other hopefuls from the state at the championship are Saraswati Chand in the 200m and 400m events and Sukumati Laguri in 800m and 1500m.
Runs to win
Cambridge School of Cuttack have emerged champions of the 8th PVR Murty Memorial Inter-School Cricket Tournament held at Bhubananda Odisha School of Engineering. The winners defeated DAV Public School, also from Cuttack, by 64 runs.
The winning captain, Rohit Behera, led from the front by scoring an unbeaten 69 while also grabbing three wickets, to claim the Man of the Match award. Former Indian bowler Maninder Singh was the special guest and gave away the awards.
The Inter District Women’s Cricket Tournament is under way across different venues in Cuttack. The 50-over one-day league matches between the 29 teams divided into eight groups are being played on the two grounds in Ravenshaw University, the Nimpur cricket ground, SCB Medical ground and Bidanasi ground.
Ready to score
The Kuber Cup All-India Football Tournament is all set to begin from Thursday on the Unit VI Government School playground.
Organised by the Friends and Friends Youth Association (FFYA), the four-day tournament to be played under floodlights will feature eight teams.
The seven teams from within the state to participate in the event are Cuttack Sports Hostel, East Coast Railway Workshop (Bhubaneswar), Kishore Club (Bhubaneswar), Odisha Police, Odisha Homeguards (Cuttack), Phulbani Football Association, and the hosts, FFYA.
The only team outside the state is South Eastern Railway, Secunderabad.
Fun match
A hockey match between the Rourkela Police and Public XI was held last week at Biju Patnaik Stadium in Rourkela.
The Rourkela Police had organised the hockey match in which renowned former Indian hockey captain Dilip Tirkey led the team of Public XI while Police XI was led by K. Siva Subramani. The event was a part of relations improvement exercise between the police and the people. Public XI won the match by 4-2 goals.
Top seeds
An All-India Tennis Association and Odisha Tennis Association Men’s Ranking Tennis Tournament is on at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The series carries a prize of Rs 1 lakh and also will help earn points to increase national rankings for the players. Both singles and doubles events are being played in the event in which Gujarat lad Vaidik Munshaw is the top seed.
Brahmjot Singh of Delhi and Irfan Hussain of Tamil Nadu are the second and third seeds respectively. Chinmay Pradhan, Adwithiya Patnaik and coach Santosh Mallik are favourites from the state.
