Bhubaneswar, June 28: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today ordered an administrative inquiry into the attack on Union minister Santosh Gangwar's cavalcade in Bargarh on June 24.
The order for inquiry, which the revenue divisional commissioner (north) will conduct, followed a black flag demonstration by BJP workers against Naveen in Puri during his today's visit to the temple town to review preparations for rath yatra. The commissioner has been asked to submit his report within 60 days.
Though security in the town was tight in view of apprehension of retaliation by the BJP workers, police failed to prevent the demonstrators, who shouted slogans such as " Naveen Patnaik hai hai, julam chaliba nahi". The party has been organising protests all over the state against the attack on Gangwar - which has turned into a major political issue.
Prior to the chief minister's visit, the police today detained Congress workers and activists of the Shree Jagannath Sena in Puri as a preventive measure.
BJD spokesperson Pratap Deb said: "All should co-operate with the administration to ensure a smooth car festival. Today's meeting in Puri was in connection with rath yatra, and attempts to disrupt it by staging demonstration against the chief minister was not right."

In another development, the Jagannath temple administration today reiterated that no one would be allowed to touch the deities during rath yatra. "The laws relating to imposition of ban on touching the deities will be strictly implemented," said Shree Jagannath Temple Administration chief Suresh Mohapatra. His statement came moments after the chief minister concluded his review meeting.
Mohapatra said: "No one will be allowed to mount the chariots during the car festival. We have been following this practice for the past two years and will strictly implement it this time as well to ensure a smooth car festival."
The temple administration was on the back foot after failing to implement the ban during snana yatra (bathing of the deities) on June 20. In presence of the police personnel, hundreds of devotees touched the deities. This led to Puri king Dibya Singh Deb criticising the temple administration.
In a related development, actor Rajeev Khandelwal will anchor an hour-long documentary Legend of Jagannath to be aired on National Geographic Channel on July 4.
The documentary will highlight the rituals and ceremonies associated with car festival and also throw light on the rituals of Brahmaparibartan (the transfer of the soul) of the Lord.
