Cuttack, June 10: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stones and inaugurated several projects in various parts of the city today.

Naveen laid the foundation stone for two urban community health centres (UCHCs) at the satellite township of Markatnagar and Chauliaganj amidst tight security arrangements here today.

Around 30 platoons of police were deployed for the Naveen's tour to Cuttack, said deputy commissioner of police Sanjeev Arora. The tight security was keeping in view the past incident of eggs being hurled on the CM's cavalcade in February.

Official sources said that both the health centres with 30 beds each would be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore. These UCHCs will cater to 2.5 lakh people and will function as a referral hospital for five to six urban primary health centres under the Cuttack Muncipal Corporation (CMC) limits.

The UCHCs will provide outpatient departments, medical care, minor surgical facilities, institutional delivery and specialist services for medicine, paediatric and surgery under one roof, said CMC commissioner Gyana Das.

"The project has been undertaken under the National Urban Health Mission and it has been targeted to provide free drugs and diagnostics services to the residents," Das said.

Both the UCHCs will cater to the advanced medical needs of patients turning up at the primary health centres (PHCs) under the municipal corporation limits. The CMC plans to set up seven PHCs at Tulasipur, Thoriasahi, Bidyadharpur, Jagatpur, Bamphakud and Odia bazaar. Each proposed PHC will be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh while the existing five dispensaries at Nayabazar, Jobra, Sidheswarsahi, Khannagar and Bidanasi will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 10 lakh each.

Naveen also inaugurated a major road connecting the satellite township from sector 2 to sector 10 today. The road from Ashwini Hospital connecting CDA sector 10 has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore.

The district administration had faced a lot of opposition from the local residents during an eviction drive carried out in 2012 to facilitate construction of the 3-km road at Petanala. "The new road will ensure fast connectivity not only for the residents at CDA but the people from the city will also be benefited from it," said executive engineer Pramod Nayak.

Naveen also inaugurated the new building of the chief district medical officer on Cantonment road. He also inaugurated the new building of SCB's dental college.
