Cuttack, April 10: Mystery shrouds the death of a 22-year-old girl, whose charred body was found at her Mahabir Lane house in Badambadi today.
The deceased, Pragyan Routray, was a third-year information science and telecommunication student of Ravenshaw University.
The incident occurred around 10.30am when Pragyan, who was alone in the house, ended her life allegedly by setting herself on fire.
Though police suspect it to be a case of suicide, her family members have alleged that Pragyan might have been killed as the door of the house was open.
“I had gone to a nearby temple when I came to know about the death of my daughter. She was a strong individual who would not commit suicide,” said the deceased’s father Sarbeswar Routray, 55.
“If she (Pragyan) wanted to commit suicide, why would she keep the door open. It appears someone from outside is involved as the main door of the house and the room where Pragyan was found dead were open,” said her uncle Sudhakar Routray.
However, the forensic team has not found any suicide note or evidence of use of force on the victim or injury mark on her body.
A kerosene jar and matchbox had been recovered from near the victim’s body that was sent for post-mortem in the afternoon, said scientific officer Lala Chandrakant Chand.
“The reason of the death is still unclear but we have registered an unnatural death case. Further investigation in connection with the incident is on,” said a senior police official.
