Berhampur, May 22: Chatrapur sub-collector Trilochan Majhi was among the four injured in a clash between an irate mob and police at Khandara Square in Hinjlicut yesterday evening. The incident occurred following a road mishap in which two persons were killed and three others were injured.

Following the accident, irate local residents blocked the road and stopped traffic between Aska and Berhampur. When police and the sub-collector visited the place, the angry mob started pelting stones at the cops.

Then, the police resorted to lathi charge to bring the situation under control.

In the clash between the police and the mob, the sub-collector, Seragada police station officer in-charge Prasant Sahu, Hinjilicut police station sub-inspector Jogeswar Panda and a villager of Khandaragaon Mangulu Sabat were injured. They were discharged after medical aid.

Yesterday morning, Shakuntala Nayak (55), her son Mitu (30) of Gambhariguda were killed and three others were injured at Khandara Square.

Shakuntala was killed on the spot while Mitu, along with Loknath, 14, Shakuntala’s grandson, were seriously injured when a private bus, which was on its way to Bhanjanagar from Berhampur, collided with the motorcycle which Mitu was driving, said police.

After being hit by the bus, the motorcycle hit a bicycle and injured Tejaswini Swain, 14, of Khandaragaon.

Fire brigade personnel of Hinjilicut admitted Mitu, Loknath and Tejaswini to the Hinjilicut Community Health Centre. Mitu succumbed to his injuries after he was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Following the incident, residents of Kandaragaon gathered at the spot with Shakuntala’s body and blocked the road from 8am. They demanded the construction of humps on both sides of the road and that the administration bear the treatment expenses the injured persons.

They also wanted the demolition of a house that has allegedly encroached upon a portion of the road and is the reason for the accident.

Sub-collector Trilochan Majhi and sub divisional police officer B.K. Kamila rushed to the spot and tried to convince the agitators to lift the roadblock.

“We agreed to construct humps on the road but they insisted on fulfilment of other demands. They were not prepared to end the roadblock and hand over the body to the police for the post-mortem. When the police tried to seize the body from the protestors, the irate public indulged in brick batting,” said the sub-collector who sustained injuries on his hand.

The police then resorted to lathi charge and after the crowd dispersed, they seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Aska police has arrested both the driver and the conductor of the private bus that had fled from the spot after the accident.

Two platoons of police have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident in the area. Police are also looking for the villagers who had led the protest.
