Jajpur, April 20: A man allegedly killed his younger brother over a property dispute at Tikarapada village in the district late last night.
The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Anand Chandra Nayak.
Police arrested the accused, Amar Kumar Nayak, 41, today and seized the weapon that he had used in the crime.
The police said Anand and Amar did not share a good relationship and were at loggerheads over their parental property for a long time.
Both stayed separately with their families at their ancestral home.
“The two brothers had an ugly spat over the property late last night. This led to a quarrel between the two and in a fit of anger, Amar hit his younger brother with an axe. The victim was killed on the spot,” said Jajpur police superintendent Deepak Kumar.
Amar’s wife Ujali Nayak, who tried to intervene and stop her husband, also suffered injuries, he said.
Ujali was first admitted to a local government hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack when her condition deteriorated.
The accused today went to the police station and confessed that he had killed his brother.
“We have arrested the accused today and seized the weapon used in the crime from his possession,” Kumar said.
A case under section 302 (murder) of IPC has been registered against the accused, the police said, adding that the body had been sent to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
The accused was forwarded to the court today and later remanded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected.
