Man held for girl's suicide

Police have arrested a youth here for abetting suicide of his girlfriend.

Rourkela: Police have arrested a youth here for abetting suicide of his girlfriend.

On August 17, Asha Nayak, had allegedly self-immolated herself in front Amit Prasad's house. She was shifted to the Ispat General Hospital by her parents but she died after some time.

It is alleged that the accused and the victim were in a relationship for the past two years and the girl had taken the extreme step after the youth refused to marry her. Prasad, who is in late twenties, was sent to jail after his bail petition was rejected by the court.

Nayak's family had lodged a complaint with the police accusing that Prasad's family members had set their daughter on fire. Following the complaint, Prasad's parents were detained and he was arrested on Thursday from his home.

Inspector in-charge of Bandhamunda police station Arpita Khatua said: "Prasad has been booked for abetment to suicide. His parents are not detained now, but we are examining their they role in the incident. They have been asked not to leave the city."
