Bhubaneswar: Kharavela Nagar resident Amit Singh was elated when Bhubaneswar earned the smart tag in 2016, thinking that it would completely change the city and catapult it to the digital age.

Two years later, he is still waiting for it to happen, unaware that the smart city implementing agency has already launched three websites.

"I know only of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation's website as I browse it to get information. I don't know of any other s," said Singh, who runs a food joint at Sriya Square.

Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has introduced BhubaneswarOne, BhubaneswarMe and SmartCityBhubaneswar to provide information to residents and visitors about various aspects of the city.

However, most users are not aware of those owing to the lack of promotion. The authorities, which had earlier planed to promote these websites by providing links at official government websites, are yet to come up with any concrete plans.

The first to be launched - www.bhubaneswarone.in - is a map-based portal for information on administrative services, while www.bhubaneswar.me is a hub for information for tourism, food and must-visit places. BSCL's official website, www.smartcitybhuabaneswar.gov.in, provides a wide range of information about activities under the smart mission, including proposed and ongoing projects along with their status. It also has emergency contact information.

Lack of promotion on social media has added to their anonymity. The smart city website which was re-launched in April has got just 33,000 visits. Sources said the other two have had similar numbers of hits.

"Such tools will not be able to get hits without promotion. Those not tech savvy would never know of these. The websites are not helpful either," said techie Biswas Mohapatra.

The www.bhubaneswar.me was launched by chief minister Naveen Patnaik and aimed to boost the city's tourism potential. It was introduced in a hurry as the authorities wanted to put it into service for visitors during the Men's Hockey World Cup. The authorities also requested the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to link the portal to their official website to enable visitors to check those out.

However, the FIH is still to consider the request. "We are promoting the websites on various platforms. We plan to put up hoardings as well," said a BSCL official.
