Bhubaneswar: The civic body will install large LED screens for public viewing during the Men's Hockey World Cup here in November.

The state government has already asked the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to identify public congregation places in different parts of the city where the screens can be put up.

"A large number of people are expected to arrive in the city during the event. So, we have decided to put up LED screens for their viewing pleasure," said an official of the sports department.

With the installation, people will be able to watch the matches without having to subscribing to the broadcasting channel or visiting the stadium in person.

"I am eager to watch the matches, but I was sceptical about visiting the stadium because of the huge crowds," said Patia resident Suryakanta Jena.

The authorities had installed similar LED screens during the Asian Athletics Championship last July.

"The stadium got over-crowded during the event and many of us were deprived of watching events in the stadium. The LED screens came to our rescue then," said Nayapalli resident Suraj Hota.

Sources said civic officials have already started identifying suitable places to install the screens.

"We have asked our officials to look for better places where the screen can be installed. There should be enough space for people to stand and watch the matches," said Bhubaneswar mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.

Apart from the state capital, the sports and youth affairs department has also decided to install such screens in the district headquarter towns.

"Last year, we observed that people from across the state came to watch the Asian Athletics Championship. So, we have decided to install the screens in the district headquarter towns for local residents," said the official.

Sixteen teams will take part in the Men's Hockey World Cup at Kalinga Stadium here between November 28 and December 16.
