New Delhi, July 2: Arvind Kejriwal today sent Rajnath Singh a letter alleging the BJP was trying to poach Aam Aadmi Party MLAs.

Since the “misadventure” in the Lok Sabha elections, the AAP boss and 49-day chief minister has been desperate to retain his foothold in Delhi. He is pushing for a repoll as he fears the BJP --- the single largest party in the December elections --- may win over his MLAs and form the government in Delhi.

“With great regret I want to tell you that some of your party leaders are engaging in horse-trading and trying to defect our MLAs…” Kejriwal wrote to the BJP president today. He said his party had proof to justify his claim.

He then urged the BJP to stick to its stand of not forming government in Delhi and write to the Lt Governor seeking a re-election.

“I want to urge you that if the BJP is genuinely interested in holding elections then it should give in writing to the Lt Governor and demand early elections,” Kejriwal wrote.

Delhi has been under central rule since Kejriwal quit as chief minister in February this year. The elections in December had thrown up a hung Assembly, with the BJP bagging 32 of 70 seats. The AAP, which won 28 seats, formed the government with support from the Congress that bagged eight seats.

After the poor show in the Lok Sabha elections, the AAP had lost hope of regaining power in Delhi. But its hopes have been rekindled by the rail fare hike and the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and other essential commodities.

AAP leaders feel the BJP’s slogan about “achhe din” (good days) has already backfired, so the party could regain the people’s support with the promises of cheap electricity and water.

The AAP also pounced on reports about a proposed hike in power tariff in Delhi and threatened to launch an agitation.

It said such a hike would come as a blessing for the party as the people of Delhi had experienced cheap electricity during Kejriwal’s brief stint as chief minister.

“Learnt that power tariff hike would be announced in Delhi on July 7… People of Delhi would not tolerate any hike… People will be on the roads if this done…” Kejriwal said in a series of tweets.
