Cuttack, Nov. 4: The demand for justice for the family of Sk Imdad Ali, an aspiring policeman, who died recently while undergoing a physical test in Bhubaneswar, has gained momentum with a students’ delegation threatening to intensify its agitation.

Demanding justice for the victim’s family, the students’ delegation today submitted a memorandum to the district collector, Girish S.N.

“We want the state government to provide adequate compensation for the family of Sk Imdad, who died of negligence during the conduct of a physical test at Bhubaneswar, immediately,” said the students’ union president of Netaji Subhas Memorial City College, Rakesh Kumar Pati.

According to Pati, Sk Imdad of Kurang Sasan village near Phulnakahara, was a third-year arts student at Netaji Subhas Memorial City College.

He died while undergoing a physical test for constable recruitment at the 7th Orissa State Armed Police Battalion ground in Bhubaneswar on October 20.Ali had fainted while taking part in the 1.6km run in intense heat around 10.30am. Though he was rushed to Capital Hospital about half-an-hour later, he was pronounced brought dead.

Ali’s death had sparked protests, with around 2,000 aspirants blocking the road near Nalco Square for half-an-hour. Police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd in which six protesters and one policeman sustained minor injuries.

Alleging negligence in treatment, hundreds of people at Kurang Sasan village had blocked Cuttack-Niali road for over three hours the next day.

The students are also demanding a government job for a family member of Ali and have given 20 days time to the government to fulfil their demands.

“We will certainly intensify the agitation if the state government does not provide compensation and job to the family of Imdad Ali,” said former students’ union president of Ravenshaw University, Harishankar Rout.
