Bhubaneswar, Sept. 21: Orissa government today estimated that the state had suffered losses to the tune of Rs 2,120.92 crores because of the recent floods that that have wrought havoc in 19 districts. The official death toll has now gone up to 41.

Special relief commissioner Pradeepta Mohapatra said the damage had been assessed as per the reports submitted by the district collectors. Tomorrow, the report would be sent to the Central government for seeking financial assistance.

Mohapatra said: “Though all the 19 districts were ravaged, the districts of Puri and Kendrapara were worst affected because of the flood.”

The report said that the public works department would need Rs 226 crore for restoration of roads damaged by the recent floods Similarly, rural roads, belonging to the rural development department, required Rs 363.65 crore for its repair. Damaged roads, bridges, community buildings and tanks under the panchayati raj department would also need an estimated Rs 617 crore for repair and reconstruction.

Drainage system was also affected and a sum of Rs 34.54 crore was reportedly needed for its repair. The water resources department required nearly Rs 728.58 crore to take up repair embankments, canals and lift irrigation points.

The primary education buildings were also damaged and Rs 86.50 crore was required fir its repair. Rs 15.56 crore was needed for the restoration of electricity.

The State government today claimed that it had spent Rs 16.27 crore for relief works.

After the State submits its report tomorrow to the Centre, an inter-ministerial team is expected to come this week to asses the loss caused by the flood. (EOM)
