Bhubaneswar, April 22: Artists from across the state gathered at Ekamra Haat for a painting camp to mark the birth anniversary of legendary poet Jayadev.

Jayadev is known to have penned Geeta Govinda, which is a commentary on the intricacies of Krishna's relationship with Radha. The theme of the camp, hosted by the Kalpataru Art and Crafts, was Jayadev and Jagannath. Images of the poet working on his epic collection were to be found in most of works.

Many artists also portrayed the blend of romance and spirituality that Geeta Govinda is known for. The outstanding commentary on the romantic episodes of Krishna and Radha has inspired artists for generations.

"Jayadev's devotion for Lord Jagannath was surreal. He expressed that love through his poetry that is still incomparable. Celebrating his birth anniversary is an excuse for us to be immersed in his works," said Chintamani Biswal, secretary of the Kalpataru Art and Crafts.

Around 15 artists took part in the two-day camp. Their works were exhibited at Jayadev Bhavan here yesterday. The exhibition will conclude tomorrow.

"The artists have used references from Jayadev's poetry in the paintings. His poems have beautiful imagery and they look even more fascinating on canvas," said Minakshi Behera, an art enthusiast.

A drawing competition was also hosted at the exhibition where around 10 child artists were given awards for their paintings. This was followed by rendition of Geeta Govinda by singer Gitamanjari Behera.

The Lalit Kala Akademi has also exhibited selected pieces of art works dedicated to Jayadev's poetry from their collection. "These are paintings made during various workshops in previous years," said Akademi secretary Tarakant Parida.

The paintings will remain on display at the state museum gallery till tomorrow.
