Jail for official in assets case

A special vigilance court sentenced an engineer to imprisonment for taking bribe and sent a clerk to ten days' judicial remand following arrest in a disproportionate assets case.

Cuttack: A special vigilance court sentenced an engineer to imprisonment for taking bribe and sent a clerk to ten days' judicial remand following arrest in a disproportionate assets case.

The Special Judge's Court (Vigilance), Bhubaneswar, on Monday sentenced Prasanna Kumar Kishan, a former junior engineer at Gop block in Puri district, to three years' rigorous imprisonment, while imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 in a bribe case registered about six years ago.

On the same day, the Special Judge's Court (Vigilance), Berhampur, remanded Dandapani Mohapatra, junior clerk-cum-typist at the office of executive engineer of Roads and Buildings Division in Berhampur, in judicial custody for ten days after arrest following detection of assets disproportionate to his known sources of his income.

The vigilance unit in Puri had registered a case on July 30, 2012, and filed a chargesheet against Kishan for demand and acceptance of bribe of Rs 5,000 from Rasmi Ranjan Moharatha of Illajang village Gop for issuing him a cheque for Rs 51,500 towards payment of cost of materials and charges of labour for construction of road under MGNREGS.

In the case of Mohapatra, simultaneous raids were conducted on his house at Golanthara Chati in Ganjam, office in Berhampur as well as houses of his relatives at Haladiapadar and Chhatrapur in Ganjam on May 25, 2018, following allegations of acquisition of disproportionate assets.

In course of search and inventory, Mohapatra was found in possession of assets worth Rs 63,95,387, including one triple-storey building, one double-storey building, eight homestead plots, gold and silver ornaments, bank and insurance deposits, three motorcycles and several costly household articles.

His disproportionate assets to the known sources of income was calculated at Rs 59,41,943, said a vigilance (co-ordination) official.
