Berhampur, July 19: The police have shifted 70 inmates, including 46 arrested from Chachina village and two from Marathi Sahi, amid tight security from Kodala sub-jail to the circle jail here late last night.

Though the Kodala jail authorities pleaded that the jail had been overcrowded with 192 inmates as against its capacity of 109, sources said the inmates were shifted since there was tension in the area as 46 arrested from Chachina had been lodged in the jail.

On July 13, there was a violent group clash in Kodala area between the residents of Chachina and Marathi Sahi villages. Two persons were killed in the incident. Two days later, police had resorted to firing killing two persons.

However, the situation in Kodala is limping back to normal. Night curfew and prohibitory order under 144 CrPC were completely lifted from the affected area.

“The prohibitory order was lifted from Kodala on Monday and the night curfew, which had been imposed since July 13, was lifted today as the situation improved further,” said inspector in-charge of Kodala police station Soubhagya Kumar Sahu.

In another development, the Ganjam district administration had organised four mobile health camps at Matha Sarsingh, Digapada, Phasi and Khajapalli, where 150 to 200 people checked their health in each camp. The medical officers and their staff managed these camps. The block development officer or the tehsildar of each area were also present in the camps, sources said. However, there was no health camp at the most affected Chachina village.

Peace committee meetings were held at Purushottampur and Kabisuryanagar, in which panchayat sarpanch, NAC councillors and representatives from the chamber of commerce and other walks of life had participated.

Though a peace committee meeting was to be held at Kodala on Monday, it was postponed for a day due to unknown reasons.

Ganjam collector Dr Kishan Kumar today paid unscheduled visit to some of the primary schools in Kabisuryanagar block. “I supervised these schools to see whether they were open and the mid-day meal was being provided,” said Kumar. He enquired from the students about the meal scheme and the supply of egg curry. The collector visited four villages under Kabisuryanagar block, including Khajapalli, Degaon, Bahalapalli and Khairapalli. However, he skipped Chachina village under the same block.

Moreover, the Ganjam district administration has handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to Urmila Palei, mother of deceased Narayan Palei of Khajapalli under Beguniapada block, today. Palei died in police firing on July 15.
