Students of BJB Autonomous College in association with youth group Nasha Mukti Yuva Sankalp conducted an awareness programme on harmful impacts of tobacco at Shantipalli slum in Bhubaneswar. State nodal officer for tobacco control Pranav Pattnaik spoke about the harmful effects of tobacco and the free counselling and medication facilities provided by the government. Students staged a street play on the subject. This apart, the department of philosophy of the college organised its annual meet on the college campus.

Jobs for students 

The two-year MBA in rural management programme of Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, concluded with its annual placement event, Xuberance, recently. About 30 companies took part in the process of which 12 were new recruiters. The placement event witnessed companies from all established sectors of research and consulting, financial inclusion, development, cooperatives, corporate social responsibility and banking and financial services institutions. The highest domestic salary stood at Rs. 11.00 lakh per annum while the average annual compensation was Rs 7.32 lakh per annum.

Players selected  

Abhinab Ghose, Omm Bikash Nayak, Nilu Pradhan and Pratik Anurag Das of Utkal University have been selected for the east zone university team for the All India Vizzy Trophy to be held in Mumbai from March 29. 

This year, the varsity emerged champion in the East Zone University Cricket Tournament in Calcutta.  

Road safety

Koustuv Institute of Self Domain, an engineering college for women in Bhubaneswar, organised a two-day workshop on road safety in association with Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited on March 22 and 23. 

Experts stressed safety measures and importance of road safety. They explained various aspects of traffic rules, training and prevention of accidents. A competition was organised to generate interest of the students towards road safety.

Tips for lawyers 

At the legal-cum-cultural festival, Lexcellence, of University Law College, Bhubaneswar, governor S.C. Jamir said law was an honourable profession and lawyers led the nation's freedom movement. Jamir urged the students to work for the growth of the nation keeping in mind the ethics and principles of the profession. Reeti Tripathy, a student of eighth semester in the BA LLB (Hons) course, received the Overall Excellence Award and Academic Topper for the Session 2015-16. A cultural programme was organised after the award ceremony.

Soft power

The department of journalism and mass communication of Central University of Odisha organised a symposium on the role of soft power in India's foreign policy. Retired IFS officer and former ambassador to Portugal Jitendra Nath Mishra delivered the symposium lecture and threw light on the concepts of hard power and soft power. Mishra spoke about India’s historical ties with other parts of the world. 

Safe water drive 

Students of faculty of management sciences of SOA University took out a rally to create awareness about conserving water on World Water Day. Students carried placards to propagate messages on water conservation, water harvesting and water pollution. 

The event was supported by many organisations working for water issues, including Walk for Water, Rivers of the World, The Climate Reality Project and The Analytics Odisha. 

Varsity event 

The tenth convocation of the North Odisha University was held on March 27 on the university campus recently. Governor S.C. Jamir told students to focus on character-building and nation-building. He asked them to follow Swami Vivekananda's vision of education. PhD, postgraduate and graduate degrees were conferred on the students of batches of 2015 and 2016. Director of Isro's National Remote Sensing Centre, Y.V.N. Krishna Murthy, who was the chief guest, emphasised the role of education in transforming society and making India a powerful nation.
