Balangir: Chief district medical officer Sugyanendra Mishra has issued an advisory to all the health officials to take utmost care and follow the basic safety norm while administering injections to the patients.

Balangir CDMO Sugyanendra Mishra said that he has issued an advisory to all the health officials in the district to ensure safe administration of intravenous injections. "I have issued an advisory outlining to follow certain safety norms while administering intravenous injections," he said.

The advisory came in the wake of criticisms from various quarters as two female patients developed severe gangrene after being administered wrong injections at the district headquarters hospital. The two patients had to undergo amputation in Cuttack losing two fingers.

He has also formed a team comprising the assistant district medical officer and the surgery specialist of the district headquarters hospital to inquire into the incidents. "I am waiting for the report. Appropriate action will be taken against anyone found guilty," Mishra said.

In another development, Narahari Seth, the husband of one of the two victims, Khusboo Seth, has lodged a complaint with Balangir Town police against the hospital.

The victims were admitted to the district headquarters hospital in December last year. They complained of severe gangrene after repeated administration of intravenous injection by the nurses. The patients and their attendants had drawn the attention of the doctors. But instead of giving them necessary treatment, the hospital referred them to Vimsar in Burla. Later they were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where they underwent amputation, each losing two fingers.
