Cuttack, Nov. 8: A Plus Two first-year student of Ravenshaw Junior College has been admitted to the psychiatric ward of SCB hospital and her family has brought charges of "mental harassment" at the hostel by her seniors.

The parents of the victim, a science student of the junior college, have demanded action against those involved in the alleged ragging incident.

"It had been one-and-a-half months that my daughter, who is unable to walk properly, had been facing harassment by other girls staying at the hostel. We had brought the matter to the notice of the hostel authorities, but they did not take any corrective measure," said the victim's father Anirudha Mohapatra.

Mohapatra said her hostel-mates, mostly the Ravenshaw University students, used to intentionally harass his daughter by switching off the lights whenever she wanted to study and also her mobile phone at regular intervals.

The family said the victim was unable to recognise people now and that her condition was serious.

Ravenshaw Junior College principal Rita Das said she had no information about this. "Neither the hostel authorities nor the officials of Ravenshaw University have informed us about the incident. It was only today that we learnt about the incident. We will conduct an inquiry into the incident," said Das.

Ravenshaw University vice-chancellor P.C. Sarangi told The Telegraph that a report had been sought from the chief warden. Action would be taken against those found guilty based on the report.

The victim, who is physically challenged, shared a room at Daya Girls' hostel of the varsity since her admission to the junior college early this year. Her family members said she was being harassed by her roommates, who were also putting pressure on her to take admission in a particular coaching centre.

Usually, 20 to 30 students of Ravenshaw Junior College, which functions on the Ravenshaw University campus, are accommodated at various girls' hostels every year, because the junior college does not have a dedicated girls' hostel of its own. At present, around 40 girls enrolled in the junior college are staying in the various girls' hostels of Ravenshaw University.

This is for the first time that the harassment charge of a Plus Two student from Ravenshaw Junior College by seniors of Ravenshaw University has surfaced.
