Bhubaneswar, July 20: The Kharavela Nagar police today detained the personal security officer (PSO) of a cine star and Berhampur MP Siddhant Mohapatra while he was moving about in the Unit III area with a gun.
The PSO, Ganeswar Prasad Reddy from Berhampur, has been serving as the security officer of the MP for the last two years.
Police said that Reddy was found moving around on a black Pulsar motorcycle in the Exhibition Ground in civil dress with his gun.
The local residents suspected him to be a one of the goons involved in chain snatching incidents in the recent past in the city. The local residents informed the police.
Around 12.30pm a senior police officer on traffic duty got a call that a person with black Pulsar and gun was repairing his vehicle in a garage in Unit III area.
A police team rushed there and caught him on the spot. He was later handed over to the Kharavela Nagar police.
Reddy told the police that he had just returned from the Biju Pattnaik Airport where he had dropped Mohapatra, a first time MP who went to Delhi to attend the monsoon session of the parliament.
“I was in the garage to repair my two wheeler. Before I could understand what was happening police caught me. My fault was that I was driving a black Pulsar and had my service gun with me,” said Reddy who has been serving in the police department for last 12 years.
He said that he was unaware of the recent incidents of crimes in the city.
The police said that they seized his service pistol, 14 rounds of live bullet and the pulsar motorcycle.
He was guilty of not handling the weapon properly which created panic among the local residents.
“We have detained him. He will be released on a Personal Recognizance bail bond from the police station,” said a senior police officer.
