Bhubaneswar, May 6: The state technical education department has decided to probe the alleged irregularities in admitting students for the vacant seats at College of Engineering and Technology (CET).

The matter will be discussed at the board meeting of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) to be held tomorrow, said technical education secretary C.S. Kumar.

The controversy arose when it was found that many students with very low scores in Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) were admitted to the premier college merely on “health grounds.”

“If an institute wants meritorious students, it would bring out the advertisements so that the seats are filled up by right candidates, but this was not the case with the CET,” said educationist R.N. Panda.

CET principal S.P. Mohanty said: “A student who wants a transfer, downloads the form from the BPUT website and applies to a college with the health certificate. After the consent of the particular college, he or she can apply. Till the time we have vacant seats, we cannot deny such applicants.”

He also said that there was no rule to advertise vacant seats.
