Bhubaneswar, May 11: The state government has a cool piece of news for you - reservoirs in Odisha have enough water to generate electricity and meet the power demands this summer.
Energy secretary Suresh Mohapatra today said: "The water level in the reservoirs is quite satisfactory and the hydro power situation is quite good in the state. If the monsoon is delayed till July 30, we will be able to produce adequate power from the hydro-power stations."
The energy secretary further said: "The state needs about 4,000 MW everyday during peak hours and we are in a position to meet the requirement."
During peak hours, generation from hydro sources varies between 11,00MW and 1,700MW and the remaining requirement is met from the thermal sector.
With the announcement that the monsoon will hit Kerala on June 1, the state government has geared up its machinery to meet unforeseen situation during the rainy season.
It has asked all the 30 district collectors to store adequate food materials in various interior pockets of the state.
In another development, the water resources department has asked all its officials not to leave the headquarters during the monsoon season.
Water resources secretary P.K. Jena said: "All the officials have been asked to remain on duties from June 15 to November 15. During this period, the state often witnesses cyclones and floods. Criminal action will be initiated against officials who violate the order."
Earlier, the department used to take only disciplinary action against such erring officials.
Deputy relief commissioner Pravat Mohapatra said: "All the district collectors have been asked to convene the district natural calamities meeting immediately to chalk out their district-specific plans."
The state is expecting the arrival of monsoon in the second week of June. Director meterology Sarat Sahu said: "Though the monsoon hits Odisha coast on June 10, it would be too early to predict the exact date at this point."
Last year, the monsoon had hit the state on June 18 and in 2013 it was June 8. In 2012, the monsoon had arrived in the state on June 17.
In New Delhi, chief minister Naveen Patnaik today met Union minister for agriculture Radha Mohan Singh and expressed his concern at the declining share of Central assistance to Odisha under different agricultural schemes. He demanded increase in the allocation of fertilisers for the ensuing kharif season.
He urged the Union minister to provide adequate funds to Odisha for sugarcane development under the National Food Security Mission and also to include six districts in the National Horticulture Mission.
