Bhubaneswar, March 18: Goons today burgled into the house of a businessman near the gurudwar at Unit-III in front of Kharavela Nagar police station and took away cash and gold jewellery worth more than Rs 12 lakh.
The businessman, Nihar Ranjan Pattnaik, said he had left house in the morning and saw the main door was open when he returned home around 1.30pm.
Pattnaik immediately lodged a complaint with Kharavela Nagar police.
The police with the scientific team rushed to the spot and collected fingerprints and other clues. Pattnaik, who was staying in the two-storey house with his sister, Minati Pattnaik, said they had left the house 10am with all doors and windows properly closed.
“We found the main door was open, and the almirahs, broken. The thieves have taken away cash worth Rs 2 lakh kept in an almirah and around 250 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh and a laptop,” said Pattnaik.
“We have detained some local criminals, who normally burgle into houses. We are trying to get some clues and arrest the accused,” said a senior police officer.
In another incident, criminals took away cash worth around Rs 1 lakh and an iPad from a private company employee in front of a hotel near Ram Mandir in the Kharavela nagar police limit this afternoon.
The criminals threw some Rs 10 notes near the car of the complainant, Mayank Agarwal, while he was in another shop.
Agarwal’s driver was picking up the cash, when the thieves took away Rs 92,000 cash and the iPad. He lodged a police complaint.
On Saturday night, five motorcycle-borne chain snatchers fired at a police havildar and attacked a man when he had resisted their attempts to snatch a chain from his wife in front of a jewellery showroom at Master Canteen Square.
The police said three of the accused, involved in the Saturday night firing, had been arrested. “They are interrogating them to find out more information about the gang,” said a police officer.
