Sambalpur, Aug. 10: A 17-year-old girl suffered injuries on her left leg after a female travel ticket examiner (TTE) pushed her from a running train at Sambalpur Road railway station today.

The victim has been identified as Rekha Naik of Gaurpara under the Rengali police limits of the district.

The incident took place while Rekha was coming to Sambalpur to visit the Budharaja temple on the Samaleswari Express (Howrah-Koraput) with her sister-in-law and two friends.

Rekha's sister-in-law Surekha Naik said: "We boarded the train at Rengali railway station. A little later, around five TTEs approached us for tickets. Though we had booked tickets, we somehow lost it in the train. However, we explained the matter to them."

"But, the female TTE demand a fine of Rs 220 from each one of us. We did not have that much money at that time. We told her that we were unable to pay the fine. On this, she said they would take us to police station. The TTE also indulged in an argument with us," said Surekha.

"When the train arrived at Sambalpur Road railway station, we tried to alight from it. But, the TTE resisted us and closed the compartment's gate. As the train started departing from the station, we again made an effort to get down from it. Then the TTE took my two-year-old daughter in her custody. When I opposed, she pushed Rekha from the running train," she said.

The people, who were present at the station, rushed Rekha to Sambalpur District Headquarters Hospital. Later, she was shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla.

Dr M. Shakti Dora, doctor at the institute's orthopaedic department, said: "The ankle joint is not in a good condition. We will refer her to Cuttack after her condition becomes stable."

Divisional railway manager D.K. Singh said they did not have any information about the incident. However, he said the matter would be investigated.
