Sambalpur, June 21: The municipal corporation has proposed to set up solid waste management system at Nildungri, on the outskirts of Sambalpur.

Commissioner of Sambalpur Municipal Corporation Bimalendu Rai said: "A plot measuring 31 acres has been identified for the purpose. We have got possession of the land. A consultant firm will prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for the solid waste management system in Sambalpur and a team had visited the city to conduct a survey," said Rai.

"The work on the project will begin after the report gets an approval from the government," he added.

He said the civic body would apply for environmental clearance for the project after the report is prepared.

"The department of forest and environment will organise a public hearing in the area in presence of district administration officials for the solid waste management system," Rai said.

Residents have opposed dumping of garbage in their locality. Municipal corporation sources said the city generated about 100 tonnes of garbage every day. At present, garbage generated in the city is dumped at Durgapali. Earlier, it was dumped at Jamadarpali. The corporation had decided to set up the solid waste management system at Basantpur as well. However, the idea did not materialise as the land for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management was identified in the same locality.

"The corporation has recently introduced door-to-door garbage collection facility in the city. It is also strongly discouraging the use of polythene carry bags. The implementation of such proposals will help to develop cleanliness among the people," said resident Kartik Singh.
