Rourkela, Nov. 1: Police arrested a marketing co-ordinator for Flipkart on charges of fraud here following a complaint by a company official.
Sudip Maiti, 25, was taken into custody following allegations he was tampering with the customers' orders or sending them substandard products.
Maiti joined Flipkart as its marketing co-ordinator for Rourkela this year. His job was to ensure delivery of orders booked online by customers. He would source the products either from the local market or elsewhere and send it to them.
However, he allegedly cheated customers by tampering with their orders. He would send them substandard products or ones with parts missing. According to sources, he began tampering with the products from May in order to make a quick buck.
"For example, if someone ordered a computer with a specific configuration, he would manipulate the configurations," said Uditnagar deputy superintendent of police Ramesh Panigrahi.
Panigrahi said that sometimes, Maiti would only supply the cabinet of the computer instead of the whole system. On occasions, he supplied completely different products to the customers.
Finally, Flipkart official Sarat Kapoor filed a police complaint against Maiti yesterday. Acting on the complaint, the police arrested him from his residence in the evening.
"Kapoor registered a complaint in his name and we arrested him from his residence. According to the information we have gathered, Maiti has committed fraud to the tune of Rs. 27 lakh," Panigrahi said.
Maiti has been booked under various sections of IPC and Sections 66 (G) of the IT Act, said the police official. He said that they were conducting a probe to ascertain if he had involved any friends in his illegal activities.
